FLAT 5 – EPISODE 40

“Thank you,” I said to the waiter as she served my order.

After about two minutes, the waiter left us.

I opened my order and decided to start eating to avoid much of the personal questions.

Of course, Derek came prepared, as he wasn’t carried away with my eating tricks to dodge questions.

“Ada, I asked you something. Please, the answer is very important to me,” Derek said with smiles.

“Wow! Forgive me, what question was that?” I asked.

“Can you be my girlfriend?” Derek repeatedly asked.

“But we are friends already, and I’m a girl,” I replied with a minced of sarcasm.

We both giggled at my response and concentrated on the food for a few minutes.

“Hope you are enjoying your meal?” Derek concernedly asked.

“Yea…it’s good!” I replied.

“Glad you are enjoying it,” Derek added.

“Sure!”

“Ada!” Derek called out.

“Yes dear,” I answered.

“I like you a lot. I can’t control how I feel for you anymore. I don’t know how this may sound to you, but I’m just telling you the true state of my mind.

“I decided to tell you how I truly feel towards you, even if after saying such you decide not to talk to me again,” Derek said.

He fixed his eyes on me like someone that was expecting a reply.

I was lost and didn’t know the right words to say.

So I smartly had to giggle to ease some tension.

“Say something Ada!” he demanded.

“I don’t know what to say, Derek,” I replied.

“You can start by saying ‘yes’ to my request,” Derek suggestively retorted.

We both giggled at his comment.

“Derek the truth is, I’m scared. I wouldn’t want to be heartbroken and as you know; your flat 5 friends are known for such,” I replied.

“Yes, I know that my friends are not the best to be around, but I’m not like them,” Derek said.

“Why do you feel that you are different?” I inquisitively asked.

“Because I know myself more than others perceive me in association with Chuma and Kelvin,” Derek replied.

“I just want you to give me time to think through your request and get back to you,” I said.

“Like how much time?” Derek asked.

“Like a year,” I replied.

“A year? “ Derek exclaimed.

“Yea…It’s that too much?” I playfully asked.

“Yes Ada,” Derek replied with disappointment in his tone.

I laughed aloud, and he joined me in my laughter.

“Haba! Ada, you go kill person with HBP o,” Derek said.

“It’s not that dear. I’m just trying to tell you to hang in there as long as it will take me to decide,” I chimed in.

“I understand Ada, just that I can’t help myself anymore with the feelings that grow every day.”

“Derek, what do you want me to do?”

“Ada just say ‘yes’ to my request please.”

“Derek that will take time. I prefer when we invest more in friendship before jumping into a relationship.”

“Yea…I know we have to understand each other as friends first, but we can still be in a relationship and still work on our friendship,” Derek replied.

“Hmm…that’s difficult!” I said.

“Nothing is difficult Ada, just make a decision first, we can work on the rest.”

“That’s why I said you should give me time to decide,” I chimed in.

“It’s alright. Take all the time pretty,” Derek said.

“Thank you, dear,” I replied with relieve.

“You are welcome, Ada. But I’m free to call anytime right?”

“Sure! Why not?”

“Thank you so much, Ada.”

“I should thank you more for bringing me to this beautiful place to have dinner with you,” I said.

“You are welcome Ada, Let’s eat up, it’s getting late,” Derek said as we both faced our meal.

After about 20 minutes, we were done with the meal.

It was almost 9:00 pm in the night.

“I think we should do this more often,” Derek said.

I giggled at his subtle proposal.

“Hope if I call you out, you will come out with me?” Derek asked.

“Why not?”

“Thank you, Ada. Let’s head home now,” Derek said.

“Alright…thanks for everything,” I said in appreciation.

“It’s nothing Ada,” Derek replied as he held me by the hand and we left the dining room to the parking lot.
